چکیده
This paper examines the relationship between federal research funding and private donations at 221 private and public research and doctoral universities between 1973 and 1997. As with previous studies, there is a positive relationship between these two sources of funding for these universities. This paper extends previous research by examining the effect of federal research funding across five different types of private donors: alumni, corporations, foundations, other individuals, and donations given as bequests. The results suggest there is a positive correlation across all types of donors, but that the effect varies across the donors. After controlling for potential endogeneity and omitted variable bias, the effect of increasing federal research expenditures by one dollar ranges between 6 and 61 cents. The strongest effect is seen with respect to alumni, especially alumni from private universities. Although there are statistically significant differences in the reactions by alumni at private and public universities to changes in federal funding, I find no significant differences in the reactions by other types of donors across these types of universities. متن کاملContracting for Information (Preliminary and Incomplete)∗
We study optimal contracts between a decision maker and an expert where the decision maker can commit to make transfers to the expert contingent on his advice but cannot commit to take an action contingent on advice. We show that optimal contracts never entail full revelation. Instead, the decision maker pays the expert to reveal for some states and doesn’t compensate the expert at all in other...
متن کاملTeacher Quality and Student Inequality ∗
Recent research using matched student-teacher data has confirmed the existence of an important role for teaching quality in producing student test score improvement in elementary and middle schools (Aaronson, Barrow, Sander (2007), Hanushek, Kain, O’Brien, Rivken (2005), Kane, Rockoff, and Staiger (2007)). This development has intensified concerns about the ability of underperforming schools to...
متن کاملPreliminary and Incomplete Fiscal Shenanigans, Targeted Federal Health Care Funds, and Patient Mortality
The federal government spends billions of dollars each year on programs designed to increase the resources available to hospitals that serve the poor. This paper explores the intended and unintended effects of such targeted funds. First, how do these funds distort the behavior of state and local governments who wish to appropriate the funds for other uses? Second, to the extent that these funds...
